Malaysian Recycling is a leading plastic recycling plant in South-East Asia. Danube recycling and a green start-up called everwave have launched a clean-up initiative to tackle the plastic waste that is polluting the world’s rivers. The two have devised a campaign with several projects on the agenda for 2021, including public information events, projects at the sites of the participating partners, and clean-up activities at various locations. The programme will kick off in April with a clean-up effort on the Danube, during which everwave’s CollectiX waste collection boat will collect waste floating in the river. Danube recycling are sponsoring the use of the boat.

As a first-year pilot, BIOPRO decided to compensate for 50% of their plastic production. By acquiring Plastic Recovery Guarantees, they were able to demonstrate to their customers their commitment to fight plastic waste in the environment and to be part of the change. 2- As part of the loyalty program strategy, they also launched their own NFT collection backed with plastic recovery guarantees on the Plastiks Marketplace to promote their brand together with the fight against plastic pollution. Fans could complete challenges like following the brand on social medias or uploading a selfie with a product of the brand to earn points and eventually receive a free NFT of BIOPRO’s sustainable collection. Each NFT from BIOPRO’s collection was recovering 100 Kg of plastic from the environment and the awareness campaign has been a success both in terms of reputation and new signups.

Fans could complete challenges like following the brand on social medias or uploading a selfie with a product of the brand to earn points and eventually receive a free NFT of REDBIRD’S sustainable collection. Each NFT from REDBIRD’s collection was recovering 100 Kg of plastic from the environment and the awareness campaign has been a success both in terms of reputation and new signups. 3. REDBIRD also attached new utility to their NFTs, offering discounts and product giveaways for the most sustainable fans. REDBIRD invited their customers to join them on the journey to fight plastic pollution. The fans could create their profile on the Plastiks Marketplace, compensate for their own plastic consumption and be rewarded with perks by REDBIRD for their sustainability action. 4. A special part of their NFT collection was put for sale. Those special NFTs were customized shoes, special access to new products and tickets for special events of the brand. For example, some buyers of those NFTs were the very first to wear the 2022 REDBIRD XBR Sneaker. When the full collection (100 NFTs) was sold, REDBIRD together with its customers had promoted the guarantee that 10000 tons of plastic have been recovered.

Plastic waste is everywhere and in everything, found from the deepest ocean trench to the highest mountain tops. And partially to blame for this issue is the lack of transparency and accountability within the supply chain of plastics. Some researchers argue that by 2050, there may be more plastic by weight in the world’s oceans than there are fish. All the plastic that has ended up in the environment over the decades is still there. Due to weathering caused by sunlight, and waves, larger plastic items break down into smaller pieces but they never disappear, and more and more plastic is floating in the ocean where it finds its way into sea life, and eventually our human bodies.
